Peru Missions Trip 2020 with Galcom International
A communication to the congregation on the Peru Missions Trip has been a long time in coming. In case you were not aware, the trip was cancelled. Initially, we held out hope that there may be a possibility of another trip later this year. However, that possibility was short lived as COVID-19 turned to a pandemic and restrictions became broad with time frames extended and unknown.
We are saddened and disappointed for those who could not go on this Missions trip. They had committed themselves to so much effort and energy in preparation. The participants wanted to be a partner in the Great Commission by spreading the Gospel in the country of Peru. A special thank you to the Peru Fundraiser team for their incredible effort in providing an entertaining and fun Fundraiser Event. Many enjoyed the desserts made by Daniella and Samantha. It was wonderful to see the response of the congregation in support of the participants. It is the Elders’ hope and prayer that this congregational support would balance in some way some of their disappointment.
Bringing closure to some of the details of this trip has been a challenge. First off, the Elders’ desire was that the participants would not be out of pocket in any expenses. Cancelled airline fees amounted to approximately $3,000 and every effort was made to recover those costs. However, they were only recoverable via a future flight and that commitment of the participants was not possible. A decision by the Elders was made to cover those costs from the Missions Budget and General Funds.
A second area of challenge was in making decisions about the donations collected in support of the Peru Missions Trip and its participants. These donations had been given directly to the church through Sunday offerings, or directly to Galcom through Sunday offerings, or through the Fundraiser Event. Since the trip didn’t happen, the identifiable donors had to be contacted. Each identifiable donor was given an option to be reimbursed, or to redirect their donation to CBC Missions or to Galcom. We have tried our best to contact everyone in this category. If, for some reason, you have not been contacted please reach out to either Elder Darrell or Elder Randy as soon as possible. In addition, an amount from the Fundraiser Event was considered non-identifiable donations and this will be forwarded to Galcom as ongoing support of their ministry. We have consulted with Galcom to identify specific uses of these funds.
Please feel free to contact Darrell or Randy by email if more detail or information is needed. Ongoing discussion and decisions towards establishing policy around CBC Mission Trips and Fundraiser Events will continue with the Missions Committee and the Board of Elders.

This Elder Update will be a bit different from the ones that have been sent out in the past. It will be a little more personal, although it comes from the whole board. The covid19 pandemic has had an affect on each and every one of our lives. Some of you are grieving the loss of a loved one that you were not able to be with in those last hours and days. We weep with you. Some of you have undergone financial hardships due to layoff or work slowing down. We pray for you and offer you help if you will only ask. Some of you have become Homeschool teachers for your young children. We pray for you.
All of this being said, we ask, we beg you, continue to pray for your elders. We don’t need to remind you that we are just men. We are men that have been called by God to lead a church and we are doing so, but we are doing so through rough waters. We have been forced to make decisions in the last month that would have never crossed any of our minds just a few months ago and have laboured over each and every one of them taking into consideration how they would affect you, the congregation. We are thankful for your support and encouragement as we all go through this time together. We are amazed at the comfort and wisdom that we receive from our Lord.
What have we been up to?
Last Saturday, as elders, we performed the Elder Covenant Ceremony with our three newest elders, Darrell Shaule, Randy Kraul, and Brian Burnet. This ceremony took place over Zoom and was recorded. The recording will be shown for the congregation soon. We are working out how best to do this from a technical standpoint. This is not how we would have liked to have gone through the Elder Covenant Ceremony but was necessary due to the current situation. We will be sure to do something more celebratory when we can meet once again.
For most of April, the elders were meeting every day for a short check-in meeting. We have decided to reduce the frequency of these meetings to every Wednesday. We are thankful for this time to breathe.
CBC Livestream: We are truly thankful for the ability to use technology to bring Gods word to you and others. Last week we had about 150 hits on Byron’s sermon between YouTube and Facebook. We realize that this is not the same as a regular service but are thankful that we have been blessed to be able to do this for now. Please keep promoting the service to your family and friends. We all need God’s word.
Changes to the CBC website: A link has been added on the CBC website Home page to lead you directly to the Helping Hands ministry email. You can use this link to either offer help for someone in need or to request help.
Elder Care: As elders, it is important to spend some time caring for one another. A wise man once said: “As Elders you are needed in this time of crisis, but you will be needed after this thing is over too. Take care of one another” (This wise man was your pastor). So, as part of our Elders meeting each week we have set aside some time where we minister to one another. We talk about the books we are reading. We ask for prayer in certain areas that we are struggling with and tell one another of the things that we are thankful for, even in the midst of a pandemic.
Update on the AGM: We have been in contact with council regarding the legal requirements for our AGM given the current situation. The long and the short of it is that we will have an AGM. It may look different but it will happen.
Giving: We thank you for your continued generosity in giving. Because of your generosity we are able to continue to support the missionaries that depend on CBC for part of their livelihood. Please keep up the good work. The ways to give to CBC are on www.communitybible.ca.
This Sunday: This Sunday we will be celebrating communion together (but apart). As with the Good Friday service we ask that you prepare the elements (Bread and wine/juice) ahead of time. We will partake in the elements together with instruction from Pastor Byron.
We would like to close this update with a couple passages from scripture. We hope this will encourage you this week.
Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. ESV
Psalm 9:9-10 The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. v10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. ESV
Isaiah26:3-4 You keep the mind that is dependant on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you. v4 Trust in the Lord forever, because in the Lord, the Lord himself, is an everlasting rock! CSB
We pray that you trust in the Lord this week.
